Elmarco Talks webinar series | Visible Light-Activated Antimicrobial Nanofibers for Medical Dressings
During the Elmarco TALKS with Václav Houska, R&D Specialist at LAM‑X, we discover how photochemistry, material design, and electrospinning can come together in the development of advanced antimicrobial medical dressings.
From Czech research
to advanced nanofiber solutions
LAM‑X is a Czech deep tech startup company translating more than two decades of academic research in polymer chemistry and photochemistry into practical nanofiber solutions. Founded in Prague, the company is developing its technology for applications in healthcare, water filtration, or agriculture.
At the heart of the LAM‑X platform are polymer nanofibers containing embedded organic photosensitizers. When activated by visible blue light, they generate reactive singlet oxygen, which can damage and deactivate harmful microorganisms. The active component is incorporated directly into the nanofiber structure, combining physical microbial retention with light‑activated antimicrobial functionality.
What does the session cover?
The presentation focuses on the development of light‑activated nanofiber materials for medical dressings and the challenges involved in bringing them closer to practical use.
Václav Houska explains the basic principles behind the patented LAM‑X technology, including the role of singlet oxygen, photosensitizers, and carefully engineered nanofiber structures. He will also discuss why material composition and design are decisive for antibacterial performance.
The session then moves from the scientific principle to its medical application. It covers the development and evaluation of antimicrobial dressings, selected laboratory results, early clinical work, and the practical challenges associated with electrospinning and subsequent material processing.
